Accelerator of the Week- EvoNexus
EvoNexus is a technology incubator and ground zero for Southern California’s startup community with locations in San Diego and Irvine offering 40,000 square feet of class, office, and dry lab space.
I spoke with with portfolio manager Carolyn Liikala to find out more about the EvoNexus program.
In just one sentence, what is your accelerator called and what do you do?
EvoNexus is a probono incubator for tech startup companies. Our program is fully supported by sponsors such as Qualcomm, Cisco EIR, InterDigital, ViaSat and The Irvine Company. We are able to provide office space, programming, discounted services, access to capital, and mentorship to our portfolio companies.
What makes your program different or unique?
Startups have no financial or IPrelated obligations to EvoNexus. Once admitted, they receive free office space along with access to our huge network of mentors, advisors and investors. Startups benefit hugely from our strong partnerships with our techfocused sponsors and mentor network.
What do you love the most about working with startups?
I am constantly inspired by the startups I work alongside. Each team member on a startup is incredibly driven and passionate about what they do.
What is the hardest or most surprising part of working with startups?
Long hours! Startups never sleep. Additionally, it is tough facing setbacks due to fundraising challenges.
Do you have a success story to share? Who are the most notable or interesting companies to go through your program?
One of our very first companies was EcoATM. Starting as an idea and two founders, it grew and ultimately was acquired by Outerwall for $250M. This success paved the way for 3 EvoNexus offices in San Diego and Irvine.
How, if in any way, has Foundersuite helped your companies?
We haven’t come across a platform as comprehensive as Foundersuite. I was excited to learn about the platform and all of the avenues for support and service they provide for startups. We look forward to getting our companies onboard!
Finally, what is your best tip for running a startup?
Solve a problem. Find a problem, build a vision and create a viable solution.
