I have a new friend, Leanne, an educator from upstate New York. We talk at our community pool.

Leanne mentioned negative trends at the community college where she teaches. They were and are the same ones I experienced at the community college, nearly 3,000 miles away, where I taught for 20 years.

Administrators who give themselves 20% raises while they give faculty token amounts and staff, nothing. Faculty eager to argue over minor matters while student needs go unaddressed. Students graduating to low-paid, insecure jobs with no healthcare or benefits.

We both agreed about the feeling of uneasy anticipation in the general fabric of the world.

“Something’s got to give,” I said.

When I got out of the pool, I added, “I am an old woman. I’m glad I’m still in good shape. I think I’ve done this so I can face whatever comes.”

What changes are coming?

Yesterday was my daughter’s 32nd birthday and we went to see the Tampa Bay Rays play the Houston Astros. I ran up and down stairs faster than my daughter and her boyfriend.
