Don’t Let the Government Erase Us
How to counter our stories being scrubbed from government websites
Every day I post several things on social media that highlight the accomplishments of women, non-whites, and other marginalized populations. I had always done this to some extent, just trying to counteract the white male Eurocentric history that we’ve primarily been fed in the US, but when I learned that Black History Month was no longer going to be celebrated by the Trump administration, I decided it was time to up my game.
This is particularly important now that the administration has started removing information about anyone who isn’t white and male from government websites.
Every day in February, I re-posted things about the accomplishments of Black Americans, making it clear that I do not support the silly narrative that only white men have ever done anything important or meaningful — something that is demonstrably false.
Then when March rolled around and Women’s History Month was being marked by further sanitizing of government websites, I started posting every day about women who were inventors, women who served their country in the military, women who were denied education and still excelled — in science, in mathematics, and in anything they put their minds to.
