On January 29 we passed into the Year of the Snake. Somehow I’m not surprised. But the Chinese attitude towards snakes is far different from the Western one. In the Chinese Zodiac, the snake is associated with “wisdom, charm, elegance, and transformation,” according to tourism site China Highlights. And the upcoming Year of the Snake is supposed to be about “shedding toxicity,” according to a reporter for NBC News.

I am on board for that.

As for the wisdom, charm, elegance, and transformation here on Fourth Wave, I am honored and grateful that we continue to grow — we reached 23,000 followers last month! — and continue to attract such talented writers from all over the world. I’m educated and inspired by the stories that I read here every day.

The more I learn about people’s lives in other places, the more I realize that almost every country on the planet has laws and practices that hurt women, girls, and other targeted groups. And I believe that if we come together to educate and support each other, we can make them stop.
