Viktoria Roshchyna, a 27-year-old journalist known for her courageous reporting from Russian-occupied territories, disappeared in August 2023 while on assignment in eastern Ukraine. It wasn’t until April 2024 that her family received confirmation from Russia’s Defense Ministry that she was being held in Russian detention.
Roshchyna called her parents in August: I was promised to be home in September. Mom, Dad, I love you. She was taken from the cell on September 8, ready for a prisoner exchange. She never returned. She died on September 19, 2024, during a transfer from the Taganrog detention facility to Moscow.

The Russians returned her body without eyes. Mutilated. Burning wounds on her feet. Clear signs of torture all over her body. They had removed her brain and some organs so the cause of death would be almost impossible to determine. Her neck bone was broken. Head shaved. Organs missing.
