The astonishing lines to buy Stanley tumblers were not a unique time in capitalism’s history: it’s common for cups, coffees, shoes, concert tickets, or even a weird/great croissant to get people pitching tents outside a store to secure their right to buy. There was no secret exactly when these cups would be available — except certain elites had gotten them way before we could line up for them. As a society, we sure do love our consumption.

But it’s the fact that the buying frenzy didn’t stop even when these cups became obsolete — or, worse, were lined with lead —that astonished me most. Check out this woman “packing” her Stanley cup like a purse with all sorts of insane pill and key holders, only to stuff it into a Stanley duffle bag. The Gods of Capitalism smile brightly at Sam Shan Shops, the Amazon shopper who’s garnered millions of likes and views on her “buy this now” content.

As a society, we sure do love our consumption . . . the buying frenzy didn’t stop even when these cups became obsolete — or, worse, were lined with lead
