I’m a big fan of Medium’s new Boost program and beyond grateful that Fourth Wave and its editor (that’s me!) were selected at the very last minute to join the pilot program. While it was announced in February and began soon after, we didn’t get the invite until August and weren’t officially inducted until Sept. 1. But we’re official now, Baby, so let the boosting begin!

So what exactly is a Boost? It’s a bump in distribution, which puts your story in front of more readers. How many more readers? Typically, stories that are boosted gain 500 additional views, at least.

The Boost program is already making a difference in the kinds of stories you see on Medium. With a growing cadre of human talent scouts searching for high quality stories, you should be seeing more stories that you want to read. Publications facilitated more than 1,000 stories being boosted last month alone. That’s 1,000 more stories than would have been selected for broad distribution before the program began.

Just to clarify, being part of the pilot program doesn’t mean we get to choose which stories get boosted. It means we get to nominate a limited number of stories each week to be considered for a Boost. Medium curators then review the nominations and make the final…
