My Husband Voted And Now I Don’t Have To Get Divorced

He’s a good guy, my husband. He’s an accountant and he’s witty as hell (I know, these two usually don’t go together). He loves playing music, shooting hoops with our son and relaxing with a terrible B movie. Toss a Totino’s Party Pizza in the mix and he’s in heaven. He has a great laugh and loves his family.

But what doesn’t he love? Voting.

This has been a point of contention between us for years. I consider myself a progressive. I’m a social worker, an ally, an advocate and a feminist. Bernie Sanders is my idea of a dream man. My husband agrees with Sanders, but does he fanboy over him? No. He doesn’t go to rallies, he doesn’t protest, he doesn’t read books by Noam Chomsky at children’s birthday parties (I do).

Please don’t confuse this with not caring about people, because he does. He DID vote against the same-sex marriage amendment that would’ve banned gay marriage in MN in 2012. He finds xenophobia abhorrent and would love it if the police took a hike. He believes that women have the right to choose and that everyone should have equal access to healthcare and education. We are raising our son to be conscious of the realities of the world and to be anti-racist. These things are all important, but he doesn’t…
