If you are a woman, the word “fight” is synonymous with breathing. We fight every single day for our authentic selves — for chasing our dreams, for taking a break from our unpaid responsibilities, for wanting to travel alone to discover ourselves in solitude . . . The list continues.

But what makes this fight easy is the fearless women in our lives. We are lucky if we have strong women role models who give us the strength we wouldn’t have otherwise to stand up for ourselves and to want what is rightfully ours. That’s how I continue to dream fearlessly, thanks to the wonderful women in my life, especially my mother.

Born in Mumbai, India, in 1961, my mother had a hard life to begin with

She lost her father when she was fifteen. My grandfather didn’t leave much for my mom, her mother and her sister. They had to make ends meet and put food on the table when women were still fighting for their right to earn.

My mom and her sister were the first girls in their generation to attend college. My grandma knew the value of education, and she ensured my mother completed school. My mom studied sociology. Naturally, she was far ahead in…
