In 2018, when Ellen still had her show, I watched a clip in which she kept trying to get Saoirse Ronan to care about a game of picking the guy she would most want to date, despite Ronan signaling in all sorts of ways that she just wasn’t into it. It is not one of the most serious examples of singlism by a long shot, but I found it particularly insidious. I’m still thinking about it now, years later, and I wanted to share what I wrote about it at the time. If you want to watch the clip to form your own opinion first, here it is.

On Ellen, Saoirse Ronan Beautifully Resists Pressure to Date

(From January 31, 2018, with a few updated links.)

On Ellen, Saoirse Ronan, the star of the movie Lady Bird, did not get to have a light-hearted, unstructured conversation with the host. Instead, Ellen had a plan: Saoirse would play the game “Who’d you rather?”, in which giant pictures of two famous men would be shown, and Saoirse would have to say, each time, which of the men she would prefer to date.
