Rich People Are Getting Angry With The Donald
Could this be the turning point we’ve been waiting for?
Heather Cox Richardson’s newsletter Letters from an American was eye-opening and even a little reassuring this morning. Drawing on multiple news sources, she reported that rich Republicans are getting fed up with President Trump now that he’s caused them to lose a lot of money in the stock market.
Many of them, including Elon Musk, have been urging Trump to drop his tariff plan, but The Donald (as his first wife Ivana used to call him), hasn’t been listening. Now a group backed by a Koch brother is suing him!
The right-wing New Civil Liberties Alliance, which is backed by billionaire Republican donor Charles Koch, has filed a lawsuit claiming that Trump’s tariffs against China are not permitted under the law. It argues that the president’s claim that he can impose sweeping tariffs by using the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) is misguided. It notes that the Constitution gives to Congress, not the president, the power to levy tariffs.
