Two Artists and a Sunrise

When will we learn to stop invalidating each other?

Two artists sat on opposite sides of a large hill, painting the sunrise.

One artist was blessed with bright citrus streaks of orange and gold, while the other sat under a sky of soft purple, lavender and pink.

Later, when the two artists sat with a cup of tea, looking at the paintings side by side, one haughtily said to the other, “What’s wrong with your eyes? That’s not the sunrise I saw!”

Startled and a bit defensive, the second artist said, “Nothing! That’s just the sky I saw!” She looked at the two paintings, with a furrow in her brow. “Hmmm…”

“But everyone knows that the sun rises golden and orange!” he responded in return. “I’ve never seen a purple sunrise! How foolish.”

A wise traveler standing near their table smiled at the two artists and said, “Both paintings are completely accurate. You each painted the same sunrise, just from where you stood.”

The first artist paused, and the second artist nodded.

The next day, they took their canvas and paints and each sat in the spot where the other had sat the day before.
