What I Saw at the Protest

These people had the best seats at the protest — sitting on top of something high. Also, they look like a theater troupe! All photos by author.

I love protesting. It’s a way to combine crafting and social justice. I’m not a great artist, but I can color. I can use my creativity and colored markers to make a decent protest sign. The theme of the April 5 protest, “Hand’s Off,” made it easy to come up with something to say. Here’s my sign. There were so many things I left off the list!

Too many issues. Too little sign.

I have to say the protest in San Francisco wasn’t super well organized. The stage was low, so you couldn’t see the speakers, and the amplification was poor, so you couldn’t hear them either, unless you were close, which was difficult to be. (The crowd was big!) I did manage to worm my way through several layers of people to get close enough to the stage to hear California State Senator Scott Wiener speak. He gave a rousing pep talk. So now I like him more. But after standing awhile in a clot of people, I went and sat on the steps in front of City Hall and interacted with the people who walked by, admiring their signs.

There were plenty of good ones! Here are some of my favorites.
