The biggest murderer in the Balkan peninsula (Southeastern Europe) was a senior citizen who killed men only.

Baba Anujka (English: Grandma Anujka) or Ana di Pištonja, née Drakšin (c. 1836 or 1838–1 September 1938) was a serial killer from the village of Vladimirovac (the Austrian Empire, today’s Serbia). At the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th centuries, she poisoned between 50 and 150 people.

How come an old woman who lived according to the norms of a patriarchal society had such a strong motivation to destroy men she didn’t even know?

Anujka’s early life and family

Ana Drakšin was born in today’s Romania and came to Serbia when she was a girl. Her father was a rich cattleman — a lucrative business at the turn of the century, so Ana attended a private school for children from rich families at a time when very few women got any education. A nice cozy childhood with a few worries, it seems.

Still, every villain was hurt in youth and Ana was no exception to the rule. When a young Austrian military soldier seduced her, she thought her life was sorted forever. She had a nice dowry and a guy…
