How to Run Your Life Like a Business

What would your life be like if you ran it like a business?

To answer that question, you need to know the basics of running a business. Fortunately, you don’t need a Stanford MBA to understand it. It’s really pretty simple, and once you apply a few simple principles, you’ll be running your life like a successful business sooner than you think!

We can narrow our focus by looking at a few things business people do.

First, they take responsibility.

This usually shows up as what you can call “going first.” You go first when you take action before someone else asks you to. You see a problem or situation you can address and make it better. And you do it with courage and enthusiasm.

Second, you see that much of what you do involves selling.

You sell your ability to do a job. You sell your charm to your significant other. You sell the good time you’ll have together to your friends. This creates an expectation for them, and it gives you a chance to exercise your influence.

Third, treating your life like a business means you reject passivity.

“If it’s meant to be, it’s up to me” is your mantra. This is the difference between seeing life as happening to you versus life happening for you.

Every day is an opportunity to build your “business.” What will you do with it today?
