Lunar New Year

What: A New Year based on the lunar calendar celebrated in China and much of East Asia.

When: Early to mid-January

Why I didn’t previously celebrate: I’m not East Asian.

How it is celebrated by my children: They demand Chinese food and question whether they can stay up until midnight even though it’s a school night.

Pros: Chinese food.

Cons: Persuading them to go to bed on time. A vague, slightly uncomfortable feeling that this might constitute cultural appropriation.

Rating: 3/5. I love Chinese food, but I’m not entirely comfortable about half celebrating another culture’s festival (I’m sure that Lunar New Year is a 5/5 if you know what you are doing).

Valentine’s Day (aka St. Valentine’s Day)

What: The day of love and romance (also a Christian feast day).

When: The 14th of February.

Why I didn’t previously celebrate: I’m too cool.
