A girl and a woman are cozily nestled under a blanket, enjoying a book together by the warm glow of a bedside lamp. The adult is reading aloud, engrossed in the story, while the younger one listens intently with a look of delight. The atmosphere is calm and intimate, perfect for a bedtime story.

Ah, the ritual of the nighttime reading… in which a parent lovingly, but deviously reads a book aloud to their child with the hope that at the end of it, the child will be unconscious, or at least willing to become unconscious very, very soon.

After careful investigation and close study, here are thoroughly researched and imagined reasons why the following books might be your favorite.

Goodnight Moon by Margaret Wise Brown

You enjoy reveling in a simpler time and have a thing for primary colors. You also take comfort in double-checking that all the doors are locked and the lights are off before you go to bed every night.

The sound of your voice reading this repetitive book lulls you to sleep, too.

You might also be slightly high on a dye-free CBD/gummy (or two).

Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak

You, sir or ma’am, are young at heart and always up for an adventure! There are few things you love more than celebrating a young child’s imagination.
