At work, you can pretend to be busy, and people will go away. At home, nothing will make those kids leave you alone. Vomiting. Diarrhea. Doesn’t matter who’s doing it, they’re there for everything.

Is it day? Is it night? You can’t tell. There are kids there no matter what.

You’ve played Candyland six times in the last five hours. Sometimes with one kid. Sometimes with two or three. You think some of them came from next door.

You’ve survived long enough for your kids to start school. Relief at last.

Except…they’re at school while you’re at work. Is there any gain? No, there is not. What’s more, now e-mails are coming to you from the school. For each kid. So many e-mails. And the teachers. There are so many teachers. Classroom teachers, art teachers, music teachers, gym teachers. School librarians. School nurses. You don’t mind your tax money paying these people, but do you have to interact with them, too?

One of your kids has a birthday coming up in three months. There will be a party. There will be more kids. So many more kids.
