Not Your Typical New Year’s Eve Message

My 2 year old nephew Semar giving the only thing he knows to give — LOVE

I think one of our biggest mistakes going into the new year is buying into how good and perfect things will be. If we just tweak this, or tweak that, or drop this relationship, etc, everything will be perfect. Well, the truth is that life doesn’t work that way. I’m not saying don’t be hopeful or intentional. I am however saying that if you possess an ounce of decency, life will be everything but a fairy tale.

People you’ve invested so much of yourself in will still walk out of your life. Promises you made to others and yourself will still go undone. The high experienced at the stroke of midnight will flatline by day break. Old and young, people die, and good things happen to bad people while bad things happen to good people. That’s just it — life. Life is why we can’t throw everything into the ground the last week of December and expect something beautiful and wonderful to surface by January 1.

Introspect often and fix immediately. Dream often and start building the moment you realize you want it. Love every chance you get, even if it’s just youself, and live each day knowing you’ve got something to give. Life could end before I finish writing this or before you finish reading it, but if you didn’t wait till tonight to live, love life, and give love, then only your time on this earth ends. What doesn’t end are the seeds you’ve been planting every day of your life, the memories you made with your beloved, the lessons from life experiences you shared with strangers, the idea of your very existence…

I already know which relationships in my life will thrive the most. How do I know? Daily eciprocated effort.

So, nah. For me, life is continual and more than a “one day a year” Facebook status, a redundant message at church, a meme, or anything else we will do tonight. Oh and couples, kissing at midnight won’t guarantee a healthy relationship, but the person you are daily will. It’s time to stop leaning on storybook endings and live life with compassion, conviction, love, and grace. We owe it to humanity. We owe it to each other, and we owe it to ourselves.

Happy Almost New Year!
