A free crochet pattern worked in the round

Sometimes with just a little crochet an “almost perfect gift” can be transformed into “the most perfect gift,” as I think this crochet counter cozy demonstrates.

Granite is a popular counter material, and while it looks lovely, it can be a challenge to keep the counter top from being damaged; it can also be a challenge to keep the items put on it from being damaged.

Enter the life-transforming crochet counter cozy.

I recently received a lovely and elegantly functional oil cruet.

It worked perfectly! Gone were the errant drips of oil here and there — the only problem? It needed to be protected from the countertop I set it on.

I decided that a crochet counter cozy was just the thing my new oil cruet needed, and my goal for the crochet counter cozy was as follows:

It had to look better than the blue microfiber towel I had folded into fourths and put under the cruet.

With yarn from my stash, a 5.0 mm hook, and forty-five minutes, I was able to achieve my goal:

Materials & Tools

• Worsted weight yarn
• 5.0 mm hook
• Yarn needle
• Crochet tension regulator

Skills

• Chain stitch
• Single Crochet
• Stitch into the Back Loop Only (BLO)

Pattern for a four-inch round crochet counter cozy

Note this pattern is worked in a spiral. Beginning with Round 2, all stitches are worked in the Back Loop Only (BLO).

With worsted weight yarn ch 4, slip st in first ch to form ring.

Round 1: Work 8 sc into ring; do not join, work in continuous rounds — 8 sc.

Round 2: 2 sc in the BLO of each st around — 16 sc.

Round 3: [2 sc in next st, sc in next st] 8 times — 24 sc.

Round 4: [sc in next 2 sts, 2sc in next st] 8 times — 32 sc.

Round 5: [sc in next st, 2 sc in next st, sc in next 2 sts] 8 times — 40 sc.

Round 6: [sc in next 4 sts, 2 sc in next st] 8 times — 48 sc.

Round 7: Slip st into the BLO of each st around; join with a slip st through both loops of the first slip st of Round 7— 48 sts. Fasten off and weave in ends.

One of the things I love about crochet is how it allows you to make exactly what you need and want.

I needed a cozy to protect the cruet, I wanted a splash of color in the kitchen, and in under and hour I had both!
