Crochet Square D-2

How to make a single crochet square even more square

--

How square do you need a square to be?

Sometimes you just need it to be visually square, something where the eye doesn’t notice that there is a subtle hint of rectangle to the shape, but sometimes you need it more square than that.

But what if you aren’t able to make it exactly as square as you think you need it?

There are things you can do so that the finished “square” can be pulled in four directions the pieces it is joined to, and you will get very close to the perfection you seek.

D-2 is a square I have made more than once and in more than one way, but over the decades, I have managed (to my mind) to perfect this humble and — at the same time, — quite wonderful square.

Materials and Tools

In this rendition, I am using

  • a 5.5 mm hook
  • 4 colors of worsted weight yarn
  • a crochet tension regulator

I tend to crochet loosely, so a crochet tension regulator keeps me from making everything into some kind of lace, but if your natural tension is on the firmer side, you won’t need one.
