Killing in cold blood is the American way

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro uttered those words during a press conference on December 9, 2024. He was admonishing the American public for its collective lack of empathy over the recent killing of Brian Thompson, the CEO of insurer United Healthcare.

My ears burned red hot upon hearing that statement. It is further proof the wealthy elite live in a separate reality from everyone else.

Since when has cold-blooded killings not been used to “resolve policy differences” or “express viewpoints” in this nation?

Let’s begin with chattel slavery.

I can’t think of a more violent and brutal institution. One used to create a free labor force which built the foundational wealth of the United States, and swelled the coffers of European powers.

For centuries, chattel slavery was enforced by terror and violence visited upon the enslaved — with many of the enslaved killed in cold blood in order to maintain it.

And wasn’t a civil war fought on this nation’s soil over that same damnable institution? Many…
