Finding Pleasure in the Beauty of Every Inch of Your Natural Body: A Reflection on the New Moon in Virgo

Today, September 9th(9/9), the Moon rebirths herself in Virgo, as she does every 28 days. The moon teaches us that we all have cycles and that influence, often, can be more powerful than force. She is a force unto herself and teaches us all new ways to be the same. Each astrological sign rules a different part of the body and various cultural health systems have different energetic, health and body associations with signs, planets and luminaries. But Virgo is the sign of the body as a whole. Virgo represents the wisdom of the body. Nothing we can think or do can transcend the wisdom of the body. It is an incredible organism and information station that deserves deep reverence, care and respect. These bodies in which our spirits choose to live are simply extensions of the body upon which we all live, the one we call planet Earth. No sign understands this relationship better than Virgo. The body you’re in is connected to the body you’re on. The body you’re on is a macrocosm of the body you’re in. It’s impossible to alter one without affecting the other. These are the laws of physics. These are the laws of ecology. This is the reality of energy.

Virgo energy appreciates the magnificence of each human body. It wants the beauty of your natural flesh. It wants to take it as it is. It wants the beauty of your natural hair and all of the ways it twists and bends, kinks and flows — or not. It wants the uniqueness of your body (and has the capacity to explain, specifically, why your body is unique, how your body is special, how your body is unlike any other body on the planet … rationally, scientifically). Virgo believes that your body is beautiful, period, and ought to be taken care of as much as possible.

Every lunar cycle is an opportunity to set intentions to usher something new into your life. This Summer has been challenging. This is the most sane new moon we’ve had in awhile, no matter what. And on top of that, Virgo (despite some idiosyncrasies and perfectionistic and cynical tendencies) is one of the more rational energies in the Zodiac. Virgo is the Earth. Virgo is grounded — in the GROUND! Lunations and aspects affect people differently depending on how they hit people’s charts. But there are some overlaps for most people. Each new moon wants to know what you want. Despite the part that Mercury and rationality play in this lunation, the new moon really wants to know what your body wants. Take some time, take a few deep breaths and tune into your body. What does it want? What does it need to feel its healthiest? What could you let up on a little bit? What does it need to experience pleasure? To feel flexible, expansive, strong and alive? How can you structure your daily routine in a way that serves the intricacies of your body? Don’t worry about external input and the 800 diets and plans that can overwhelm anyone. What does YOUR body need? Have you spent enough time offering it different opportunities that you can be sure? If not, what do you feel drawn to try that might offer it new ways of experiencing pleasure. Because this is about more than meeting the conventional measures and indicators of health — it’s about feeling so well, that your body spends a significant amount of time existing in a state of pleasure.

How would your life be different if you focused solely on the particular needs of your own body? How would your life be different if you listened more to the needs of your body than to narratives that shun you for your dietary choices or people who criticize the ways in which you choose to manage your health? Celebrate people, places and substances that serve you more than people, places, substances and energies that harm you. What if listening to your body was more important than being codependent? What if listening to your body was more important than what other people think? You can expect others to accept your body at any point AFTER you do. Did you know that you can be healthy AND have fun!? This is Virgo speak. When the moon is in Virgo, there’s comfort and safety in having a body that functions really well. And nothing else will do.

Your body is the vessel of your spirit. No sign understands that particular role better than Virgo does. Virgo wants the body to be healthy so that it can be a hospitable home to your psyche, to your wisdom, to your intuition, to your soul, to your spirit. Perhaps some people don’t see Virgo as being too deep of an energy — but it has to have some sort of understanding if it’s soaking up all that Piscean energy it has the capacity to hold better than any other. And maybe, for some, Virgo seems a bit ascetic. But that’s not what it is at all. Virgo is a virgin — meaning that it belongs to itself. It serves itself and god first. It has freedom of movement — internally and externally. A virgin, in the traditional sense, is the one person who is truly free to experience pleasure and ecstasy in her body at any time and in any way.

Neptune in Pisces is eying this moon on the other side of the table, pulling a few heart strings from the moon — and, perhaps, a few of yours as well. Venus and Uranus are also sitting across from one another. Uranus is in Venus’ house, while Venus is in Scorpio (where she’ll station retrograde in about a month). Venus might be having a few feelings of “please don’t break anything. Please don’t break anything” while leaving Taurus alone to his own devices. But at the same time, the particular space between them right now could bring about deep intimate breakthroughs — unexpected and perhaps sudden interactions with people we know as well as people we don’t. Earth energy can be older energy, wiser energy. Earth energy is like, “yeah, we’ve been here before. Tell me something I don’t know. Share something new with me. We both know how this story ends. The same way it ended the last time. And the time before that. And the time before that. Let’s just sit and be friends.”

This can be sexy energy — but of course, be mindful that breakthroughs and breakdowns often originate from the same energy. And the particular space between Uranus and Venus right now could lead them both to do some breaking — but hopefully, it will be breaking away from things that don’t serve them, breaking away from the past, breaking away from narratives that no longer apply to the realities of their relationship with themselves and one another. The utility of all energy lies in how we use it. Just because a rose smells intoxicating doesn’t mean that it’s a good idea to eat the whole bush — you know what I mean? But for the most part — this next lunar cycle could bring about some really interesting experiences in or information about love as Venus moves through the shadow of her retrograde, offering us some insight into our own experiences of intimacy. In particular, this moon will want to offer you some wisdom about what will allow your body to feel loved and what will allow you to feel real love (healthy love — physically and emotionally) through the receptors of your body. For some, perhaps for the first time.

While this is a very Earthy new moon, it’s also a grounded in something big and deep. Perhaps you’re swimming a different sort of ocean than the ones in which you’ve bathed before. You may find yourself questioning your own actions, your own maturity, your own growth. Revel in the beauty of your own discernment. Revel in how amazing it is to be committed to your own belonging. Regardless of your gender identity, you have an Earth goddess within you. Tap into her. Speak with her. Pray to her. There are no two entities more deserving of your worship than the body you’re in and the body you’re on. If you’re looking for some guidance, those are the energies most likely to offer clear direct answers with your best interest at heart. This is a lunation worth celebrating, worth grounding yourself in, worth pouring the foundation for something huge in whatever areas of your life you need and desire to develop most right now. You have a lot of great juju right now to create, build and serve, so use every single drop offered to you with the knowledge that every drop is returning to you a hundredfold, magnified, glorified.

New Moon Blessings,

Hilary
