For this week’s Freedom Creators story, we talk to Bonnie Wilson, social media ambassador turned social media pro. Bonnie is also a marathon runner and freelancer working with several sports-related clients while blogging her own running journey. Learn more about Bonnie’s story below!

How and why did you get into freelancing?

I never thought in my wildest dreams I would be a freelancer.

When I graduated from college, my intent was to get back in the 9–5 grind but within months of my graduation, my father fell ill. I was looking for a position but needed the flexibility to be there to support my mom when needed. I had a hard time finding it.

I decided to try freelancing and had my first client, a sports startup, a couple of months in. I fell in love with it. It was a hustle and I had to work my tail off on nights when friends might of been out getting drinks, but I loved seeing my work out there and knowing what I accomplished. I was also blogging my running journeys and working with running brands via social media to pay for my habit of running all while learning that I was able to market myself in social media. I never looked back.

What’s been your proudest personal moment so far?

Recently, my client Mud Run Guide (who is a dream come true client for someone who loves fitness and obstacle course racing) got involved with a project headed by some of the best athletes from American Ninja Warrior. I got to play a part in the launch of their Kickstarter to bring fitness to kids across the nation.

How do you stay motivated and productive when flying solo?

First thing in the morning with my coffee, I skim social media networking groups and news pages to understand what the latest is in an ever-changing world. The more I read and see what other people in the field are doing, the more I find things I want to take and adapt for my clients, or things that make me want to learn more.

“You would be surprised how much fresh air and scenery help you see things more clearly. I always seem to come back more focused and ready to solve the problem.”

I am a five-time marathoner and a 25-time half marathoner. I find that if I am loosing focus or motivation on a project or if I can’t find the answers I am looking for, I will change clothes and head out on the trail by my house. You would be surprised how much fresh air and scenery help you see things more clearly. I always seem to come back more focused and ready to solve the problem.

What’s the hardest part about being an indie worker?

The unknown. I find it funny that I say that. Previously, I was working for companies in an administrative assistant role, and my position was always in danger of being downsized, so I was always worried about where the next pay check would come from, when the end would come, etc. It’s something that has followed me into freelancing.

I also find it hard for people to understand your career as a freelancer. Just because I have been able to travel (I ran my 25th half in San Francisco recently, and was still working) and have time with my dad now that he is home; I am still working, I am still making sure things are being handled for my clients and I don’t keep normal hours. There are times that I need to work on a Sunday or an evening. Nothing about my schedule is ever normal.

What advice do you have for others taking the leap?

You are going to have days where self-doubt creeps in and you will wonder if this is something you can really do. Keep working. Know that going in. When those days happen go back and look at the success you have had and the amazing things you have accomplished.
