When I first started out, one of my major pain points as a professional freelancer was finding effective marketing methods to get my name out there. From many conversations with other freelancers, this is the biggest pain point for those of us transitioning from professional careers (often with organizations where we didn’t have to do any business development and marketing) to running our own business.

The truth is, freelancing is highly competitive, and therefore, you need to learn how to effectively promote your services and expertise — to the right audience.

Because I had a long career as a lawyer, working as a freelance writer for law firms has accelerated my marketing cycle significantly. I understand my client base and know my industry inside out — and I had instant credibility with potential clients. Before I realized the advantages I had in working with law firms, however, I spent some time trying to market myself to other industries — chasing all kinds of marketing methods that one guru or another was promoting at the time. All I had to show for all this chasing is a depleted bank account and a feeling of failure.
