So you’ve decided to leave the corporate world and start out on your own. Congratulations! It’s a big step. It can be scary to leave the comfortable security of a corporate womb with its reliable salary, decent benefits, advancement opportunities, and network of coworkers. Not everyone has the self-discipline to treat their home as their workplace and set their own direction.
As an independent consultant, you are fully responsible for everything that happens in the company. Those who take best to self-employment are self-starters who can chart their own career paths, work alone, and switch easily between work contexts. You’ll need to find your own employment opportunities, which demands initiative, patience, and creativity in how you present yourself to potential clients.
Besides your professional skills, you’ll need to become a little bit of a marketer, writer, presentation designer, accountant, and office administrator. Whether you’re out of toner, coffee, or work, it’s your problem. You’ll need to acquire the knowledge and develop the skills to be independent.
