So Long, Brussels

About the author: Jaxon Gonzales ’26 is a Global Studies/FSI The Europe Center intern with the Centre for European Policy Studies in Brussels, Belgium. Jaxon is studying Economics at Stanford University.

As my time in Brussels comes to a close, I can’t help but reflect on how incredible these past few weeks have been. The political landscape has continued to shift dramatically — both in Europe and back home in the U.S. The rapid pace of change has kept me on my toes, making every day at CEPS more exciting than the last. From the reelection of Ursula von der Leyen to an ever-more-intense U.S. presidential campaign, and even a surprise Ukrainian invasion against Russia, it’s been a whirlwind of global events. I feel lucky to have been at the center of it all, watching these developments as they unfold around like-minded political nerds.

The work has been challenging, but that’s precisely what has made this experience so rewarding. Our project with the Korea Foundation has progressed significantly, and I’ve gained a much deeper understanding of the complexities involved in green technology collaborations between the EU and South Korea. It’s been fascinating to see how these two regions, despite their differences, could find common ground in their efforts to tackle climate change. My research has delved into areas I never expected, like the intricacies of EU regulatory frameworks and the nuances of South Korea’s industrial policies. I’ve also had the chance to share some of our work with our project leader Dr. Kustova!

Beyond the work, the people I’ve met have been a highlight of this internship. My fellow interns, our mentors, and the entire team at CEPS have created an environment that is as intellectually stimulating as it is supportive. I’ve built connections here that I hope will last well beyond the summer, and I’m grateful to everyone in the office for being open to sharing their journey to and work at CEPS with me.

Exploring Belgium has continued to be amazing. I’ve taken trips to Antwerp and Bruges, each with its own unique charm and history. Whether it’s been admiring the medieval architecture, eating multiple Belgian waffles in the same day, or simply getting lost in a new city, every trip has added another layer to my appreciation of this country. Even though Brussels is a true melting pot of European and global cultures, these trips have allowed me to experience the depth of Belgian culture.

As I wrap up my final week, I find myself both satisfied and sad to leave. The second half of my internship has been everything I hoped it would be — challenging, enlightening, and full of growth. I’m eager to take what I’ve learned back to Stanford and apply it in my studies. This summer has been an unforgettable chapter in my life, and I can’t wait to see where the next adventure takes me.
