As we move into the roaring twenties of the 21st century, we need to start thinking more seriously about disruptive innovation. Why? Because innovation and disruption are reshaping our world for the better.

Let’s take CRISPR 2.0. Roughly speaking, it is a molecular scalpel which can edit or delete genes. This DNA-editing tool is becoming so precise that many predict it will be able to cure 89 per cent of all genetic diseases very soon.

In fact, regarding AI, robotics, automation, 3D printing, 5G, Fintech, the sharing economy, or Crypto (just to name a few technologies and business models), it seems we’re witnessing just the tip of the iceberg.

Innovation is how people take matters in their own hands. And technology is putting on the path of cleaner, greener, richer, and healthier planet and humanity.

Nevertheless, there has been a disturbing resurgence in mainstream parties of ideas that had been declared dead decades ago. Policies proven to be ineffective and immoral are making a comeback, whether in the form of the Green New Deal, punitive and business-hobbling tax rates, or a general sense of malaise that the problems of our time can be addressed only by state action.

All of these variations play on the same theme: they together represent a pessimistic and defeatist worldview that seeks society’s salvation by assaulting private property, individual freedom, and free markets. In other words, an assault on the capitalist order.

Its latest incarnation are the nonsensical and apocalyptic policy proposals associated with the environmental movement today.

Why the constant revelling in doom and gloom? Why has our focus shifted so markedly to underscore everything we allegedly can’t do?

Prosperity for all

The 2020 Free Market Road Show will debunk the myths and fallacies that stem from baseless social pessimism and fear mongering.

What’s more, the FMRS in 2020 will also spearhead a Pan-European discussion on the spirit of innovation that allows us to progress and prosperity. Because, as Matt Ridley explains: “Innovation is the source of virtually all prosperity. It is the reason the average person now lives longer, feeds better, travels farther, is better entertained and sees more children survive than even a monarch did four centuries ago. A glance back through history shows that innovation nearly always does more good than harm.”

And we will not only celebrate disruptive innovation but also investigate its prospects in the 21st century, its roots and causes, its variations in different sectors, and how specific areas (cities/regions/etc.) can better foster it and turn it to their advantage.
