Building Our SRE Team

We’re taking the Freetrade engineering team to the next level

Since Freetrade launched in 2018, we’ve relied heavily on serverless infrastructure and tooling to build a world-class investment product.

We’ve offloaded a lot of infrastructure challenges to Google’s Cloud Platform, but other challenges, like configuring a build pipeline, have remained within the product engineering teams.

Skip forward eighteen months and it’s clear that a dedicated SRE function could allow us to move more quickly. As the engineering teams scale, a dedicated SRE (Site reliability engineering) team can drive best practice and maintain consistency between product engineering teams.

As a largely serverless organisation, this SRE team will focus on building tools to help us move faster and automate everything we do. That means building a team that can look at tooling and automation as a product.

Beyond their hands-on efforts, the SRE team’s biggest goal will be enabling others and developing a real ops culture. They’ll be building advocates in the product engineering team as well as training them. This will allow the rest of the team to self serve and ensure our approach to operations is as strong as the way we build software.

In 2020, we’re going to build an SRE team that can:

  • Half the time it takes to fully test and deploy our software.
  • Work with the test team to fully automate our delivery, whilst still allowing for manual overrides.
  • Fully automate disaster recovery, removing the need for any manual steps.
  • Automate how we monitor our software — moving metrics configuration into code and providing automatic coverage for new software.
  • Develop mature infosec tooling.
  • Support and educate the product engineering teams.

At Freetrade we’re building a new kind of SRE team that makes sense for a serverless product. If you think you can help us move SRE forward and redefine what SRE looks like for engineering in general then apply now!

We’re on a mission to bring fee-free investing to Europe and beyond. 🔥
