Born in the USA, now on Freetrade!

Back in January we added over 100 US stocks to the app, including some of our community’s most requested companies like Tesla, Apple and Netflix.

And we know there are many more US stocks that our customers are looking forward to seeing on the app following a series of big IPOs.

We’re pleased to say that we’ve now added 5 new US stocks onto the app:

To see these new stocks, all you need to do is open the app and you’ll see them in the Discover tab.

We’ll also be adding new Quick Filters very soon to help you find US and other stocks. Here’s a sneak peek:

Is the process of buying a US stock the same as a UK one?

Generally speaking, yes. Basic orders are free and Instant orders are £1, the same as UK stocks.

There are a few other things to be aware of:

  • W-8 BEN form. To invest in US stocks, you need to complete a short form in the app. It’s a common requirement for non-US nationals and it reduces the amount of tax you pay on US dividends. We’ve made it very easy to complete though so it’ll only take you a minute or two to fill out. 📝
  • Market hours. You can queue up Basic orders and these will be executed at 4pm, the same as the UK. When making Instant orders, the time difference between the UK and US means that these are only possible between 14:30 and 21:00 UK time. ⏰
  • Currency. We’ll show you the estimated price in USD, and you’ll be able to choose how much you want to invest in GBP. We’ll convert that into dollars using the rate we get from the market, which is the spot price + 0.45%. You can read more about how we execute orders here. 💰
  • Price. You may notice that the price of many US stocks is relatively high, compared to their UK counterparts. This is because historically, US companies have tended not to ‘split’ their shares as much as UK firms, resulting in a higher price per share. Soon we’ll be introducing fractional shares which will allow you to buy a piece of one whole share, spending exactly how much you want to invest. 💹

And that’s about it!

We’ll be adding thousands more US stocks soon as part of the work to build our own Investment Platform.

And you can also invest in US companies right now through the ETFs and trusts available on our app.

In the meantime, and as always, if you’re looking for any other US stocks please let us know by voting for them here! 🙏

We’re on a mission to bring fee-free investing to Europe and beyond. 🔥
