We’ve done thousands of hours of research while building FreeWill.com, interviewing folks in the Baby Boomer generation (ages 54–72) about estate planning. This group consistently makes the same three mistakes. Don’t do it!

Mistake 1: But I don’t have “an estate”!

You don’t need to own a castle in Europe to need an estate plan. Virtually everyone has some assets and items to allocate. And it’s important to plan for things like what song you might want at a service, or who might care for your pets!

Mistake 2: But I plan on living for another hundred years!

Good! And we hope that happens. But making a will now is an incredible expression of values for the people and causes you love, and you don’t want to be stuck without one!

Mistake 3: It’s too scary / complicated / expensive! I’ll do it next year.

It doesn’t have to be! You can make a will for free in just 20 minutes using FreeWill.com, and remember that you can change it at any time!

Even if you’re going to do it again in 30 years, checking this off your to-do list today is a huge win.
