About the position

FREOPP seeks a Development Manager to help take its already thriving fundraising operations to the next level. This is a unique opportunity for an experienced fundraising professional to help build his/her own development shop, as the Manager will be the organization’s first hire dedicated exclusively to fundraising. The ideal candidate will be a strong manager with exceptional relationship-building skills. The Manager’s work will be bolstered by multiple staff members who assist the development efforts in various ways, as well as a vendor that oversees direct mail and collateral.

The Development Manager will report to FREOPP’s co-founder and president, Avik Roy, who National Review has called one of the nation’s “sharpest policy minds.”

The Development Manager can be based in FREOPP’s headquarters in Austin, Texas, its Washington, D.C. office, or a virtual office located elsewhere.

Responsibilities

The Development Manager’s responsibilities will include:

  • Implementing and continually updating the organization’s fundraising strategy
  • Cultivating donor relationships through in-person visits, phone calls and correspondence
  • Working closely with FREOPP’s president and chairman of the board to identify and cultivate relationships with key prospects
  • Researching, writing, submitting, and managing foundation grants
  • Managing the relationship with the outside development vendor
  • Maintaining and improving the CRM database (with the assistance of other staff members)
  • Performing donor research, including identifying donor prospects
  • Estimated travel: 25%; will vary based on experience and qualifications of the candidate

Requirements

The ideal candidate for the Development Manager role will possess the following attributes:

  • 5+ years of professional experience, including significant experience in development
  • Understanding of and exposure to the myriad components involved in a successful development operation
  • Dedication to improving the lives of Americans whose incomes or wealth are below the U.S. median
  • Strong project management skills and ability to multi-task, set priorities and follow through
  • Charisma; strong listening skills; ability to develop strong, long-term relationships with a diverse set of donors
  • An entrepreneurial mindset and the willingness to challenge the status quo
  • Self-directed and unrelenting work ethic, capable of delivering without being micro-managed
  • Desire and ability to work collaboratively with FREOPP staff
