The diatribe
aimed at raw tribes
of rough brigands
roving in bands
best be muted:
must be suited
to cold, hard facts —
lest they react
in manner mean
by venting spleen
in harsher vein,
to pilgrims’ bane:
mete worse defeat
— beatings faith meets
blacks eyes, shows stars
and confers scars
though proud could wear
finds hard to bear
— trial better
left true martyr.
