This Old House

A Ghazal

This moldy old house is falling slowly to bits

Brick walk has rifts, the sagging porch needs lifts.

Gutters full of leaves heave and overflowing, cry

The stone chimney, once straight, drools mortar and drifts.

Gay gingerbread trim has faded away to gray

Eaves and sashes peel; the door heavy on hinges sits.

But the foundation’s steady, interior gutted and ready

Crisis or opportunity? Creation calls — use our wits!

Invite light and air, put a skylight right there

How about a spiral stair that rises in a twist?

Kitchen and bath updated, rooms in modern bright decor

All new wiring? Absolutely. What’s there’s on the fritz.

We’re crazy artists — how about chandelier for the hall

That’s also a sparkling disco ball? Let’s put on the Ritz!

Old houses are beautiful, notorious money pits

It’ll cost all we have. It is our home and our gift.
