The Atmosphere


The Earth is approximately 8,000 miles in diameter and the layer of air surrounding it, being held to the surface by gravity, is about 60 miles deep. Only about the first 6 miles of that layer are suitable for sustaining life and everything alive exists within that first mile, directly against the surface.
