Why my college job is better than your unpaid internship

Hey hey hey — I’ve got a college job for you.

Sophomore year of college— winter break — I was sitting on the kitchen floor while my mom kindly urged me to get a college job. I saw her simple suggestion as a strong criticism (I’m overly sensitive… what can I say), took it all a bit too far, applied, and landed three jobs at once (sorrynotsorry for the humble brag).

Flash forward to today. I’m a rising senior, I’ve quit two of the three jobs and — for the past year and half — have been working for a company called Fresh Prints.

Never heard of Fresh Prints? All good. Now you’re gonna. It’s a custom apparel startup that makes kick ass swag for students, companies, and organizations.

Josh, Jacob and Jolijt, our fearless leaders, at a college fair with the greatest banner you have ever seen.

We find amazing college students just like me and you (120 of them so far!), and we give them the resources to start Fresh Prints on their campuses. This is not like being a campus “representative.” Being a Manager is a time commitment, and a real job. But don’t get me wrong, it’s the best college job you can have.

Our top performing Campus Managers at the 2017 Cape Cod retreat.

As a Campus Manager, I reach out to all the clubs, greek organizations, sports teams and anyone else who prefers being clothed on on campus. I pitch the organization, land the order like a boss, and then walk the client through the ordering process until the apparel is safely in their hands.

Sound like something you’re interested in but not totally convinced yet? Here’s why this college job is better than your unpaid internship!

I’ve gained a lot of real life, adulting skills. Being a campus manager has taught me how to write a killer email, immaculately manage my time, stay organized, network, be an entrepreneur, and so much more. Being a Campus Manager is a hands on, real time, learning environment, and I’m so grateful to have a found a job that teaches me so much.

I get great pay. I’m not gonna lie — I love it. Who wouldn’t? It’s helped me travel abroad and go out for brunch on Sunday mornings. But my success determines my paycheck. The average Campus Manager earns $5,000 a year. We have Managers at certain schools that kill it and earn up to $18,000 a year. I’ve had paychecks that range from $200 to $1000 per month! Intrigued now?

I work in a supportive environment. The Fresh Prints team is a family. I am surrounded by other Campus Managers doing the same thing. We’ve got a Facebook group full of advice, recommendations, jokes, congratulations, complaints, and more. I’ve got full support of my bosses, who are there for me night and day to make sure I have what I need to succeed. Seriously, sometimes my emails are answered in seconds at 2am in the morning.

My job has flexible hours. I’m in charge of how I work. It’s my business on my campus, and I get to set the hours I work. Where I work, when I work, and what I am wearing when I work is all up to me!

I gain a great resume booster. Having a job in college looks great on a resume to future employers. But having a job that teaches me relevant skills and sets me up to succeed in the future more than great. I’ll be able to say “I built a six-figure business while a student” on my resume and that’s gonna look better than saying I can make six lattes in two minutes.

It’s not like a regular job… it’s a cool job. Not all jobs have to be tedious and job like. My job is actually fun. Being a Campus Manager is rewarding and exciting. Not only do I work hard and gain real world skills, but I’m surrounded by cool people who make me laugh and enjoy the work I do.
