Spencer Collins’ passion in life is sailing. He has moved around his whole life. He came to Bulgaria without knowing anybody at the age of 17 and is one of the few American representatives at AUBG.

As you might have guessed, he’s quite adventurous.

‘’I learned how to sail when I was in second grade in Los Angeles and then I just kind of stuck with it. I became an instructor when I was 14.’’

Spencer is a freshman student majoring in Political Science. Even though he is far away from the homeland, the only thing he misses more than Chick-fil-A is his one true passion — sailing. However, he found new ways of keeping himself occupied in AUBG — he is part of the Football team, Hiking club, and More Honors.

He chose AUBG because it allows him to get both European and American diploma and because of the location. ‘’I like the location. Blagoevgrad is not too big but not too small either, there is something very unique about it. Everything is very close location-wise.’’

Spencer is used to big changes. He has moved around the United States his whole life because his father was a Military worker. He said that it was not easy to constantly lose and gain friends but he loved this lifestyle. It taught him to be more social and in his current life in AUBG he has no problem socializing.

If he could give any advice to his younger self, it could be to not care as much for grades and in stressful times such as midterms week, Spencer deals with academic pressure through sleeping. Club meetings also help him unwind as he shares they are his favorite part of the day.

‘’I like club meetings because they are usually during evenings and it’s the last thing I do before going to bed. It’s a good way to unwind.’’

Spencer is also a big nature lover and he would love to explore Bulgaria’s nature more in the future. ‘’We went to Rila lakes a few weeks ago. I learned they are named after body parts which is pretty cool. It was amazingly beautiful.’’
