Digital Transformation of Learning with Artificial Intelligence
As technological advancements in education have emerged quickly and diversely over the last decade, traditional teacher-learner classroom settings may be no longer best suitable pedagogy to younger generation, who are often categorized as quick learners and heavy users of modern technology but may suffer from course information overload. A user friendly and intelligent learning environment that channels students to suitable personalized learning experience efficiently and adaptively in real-time may be a silver bullet to ease learning nightmare. The Virtual Learning Assistant (VLA) serves one of fittest candidates to the problem. Teachers and learners may earn bidirectional benefits from VLA.

Technologists in higher education continually strive to break through learning and teaching barriers. Through the session, we’ll demonstrate our open-source virtual learning assistant platform developed to incorporate chatbot and artificial intelligence to improve personalized student learning experience and assessment. Preliminary analytics will be presented.
Max J. Tsai serves as the Innovation Architect building and leveraging effective innovation alliances across technical and campus community. He is responsible of assessing the future state of technology innovation at Fresno State and align current innovation efforts to move toward that future state. He has more than 20 years of IT experience in higher education and actively contributes to sustainable development through invention of new technologies and innovative application of existing technologies in Education. His current research interests in the area of Digital Transformation include blockchain, IoT, ML, AI, the cloud, and analytics.
Alex Liu is an Associate Professor at California State University, Fresno. He received a PhD degree in Computer Science from the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 2007. His research interests lie in artificial intelligence, soft computing, and software engineering. He has (co-)edited high impacted international journals and (co-)organized international conferences in artificial intelligence, soft computing, and software engineering realms. He is also interested in computer science education and had mentored high school STEM outreach activities and supervised students developing service-learning projects used by 20+ local nonprofit organizations.
