The Administration has introduced new rules (“A Proclamation on Securing the Border”) to make, as they believe, the U.S. border more secure. These new rules make it harder now for people to get asylum if they cross the border illegally and also increase the penalties for doing so. The rules also speed up the process of sending people back if they don’t qualify for asylum. Though it seems, these measures are temporary and shall apply during times when too many people are trying to cross the southern border.

The White House has already taken several steps to prepare for these new rules, like adding more staff and technology at the border. They’ve also returned a record number of people over the past year. However, they say that the current immigration system is outdated and underfunded, making it hard to manage all the people crossing the border illegally.

They are also is asking Congress to provide more resources and legal authority to improve border security. While the new measures will help, they believe that real change requires action from Congress.
