How AI will elevate the Friend OS user
Friend OS is a groundbreaking Operating System that offers a distinctive approach by layering user interface elements atop connected network services, resulting in a simplified and seamless user experience. This innovative design allows users to harness the advantages of an always-connected OS while simultaneously exploring the vast potential of utilizing it as a powerful platform for developing cutting-edge software solutions.
With nearly a decade of dedicated software development for this platform, I have personally experienced the numerous benefits it offers. However, effectively conveying these advantages to others has proven to be a challenging task.
If we go ahead and look at the competitive landscape of software services online, it is clear that the large, multi-national technology companies are dominating in the fields of collaboration and productivity. Their apps and tools are amazing. And the price is free. It’s hard to convince either users or developers of why they should spend their time on a new and experimental platform.
Friend OS offers a multitude of features to both users and developers. Here’s a short list:
- Complete web based desktop environment
- File management and Cloud storage
- Chat and communication tools, including video conferencing
- Integration of web apps
- User interface customization settings
- Mobile and tablet interfaces
- Development and deployment tools
- User management and administration tools
However, impressive features alone are not sufficient for Friend OS to distinguish itself from potential competitors. It needs to offer something beyond the ordinary. Fortunately, we have discovered just that — or perhaps it is more fitting to say that it has discovered us.
Consumer AI has entered the stage as a powerful disruptor. To most, it seemed to appear like lightning from a clear blue sky. User adoption is radical — because AI has clear benefits that can be seen and understood by anyone. Personally, I enrolled in various ChatGPT-like services, and I experienced a surge of inspiration as my mind brimmed with ideas on how to integrate this remarkable technology into Friend OS. Then I went and dug deep into Github, and I discovered several “offline” AI projects — software that I could run on my own laptop. This really opened my eyes.
Friend OS is an API-driven platform with extensive language-based capabilities, designed to empower users to operate the system using spoken language. While currently offering language facilities similar to DOS, it lays the foundation for future advancements where spoken language will be seamlessly integrated for system interaction. As an example, Friend DOS — the command line interface on this platform — can control much of Friend OS via structured English words and sentences. AI will allow us to take this to the next level.
Because of AI, advanced computing will be available to the lay person for the first time, using spoken language or even slang. This will lead to a revolution similar to that of the printing press and universal literacy.
The next version of Friend OS is “Helium” (or 1.3.0). It has been in development for over two years and is the last major version before 2.0. It will be the first version of Friend with AI integrated into the system. We call it the Artificial Intelligence Management Engine, or Aime for short. Aime is another meta layer on top of abstracted sub-systems. Aime interprets user input and delegates processing to the relevant AI technologies for efficient execution of tasks. Aime also keeps track of the interactions between the user and the AI sub-systems; it knits it all together in a seamless experience.
While the initial release of AI and Aime will serve primarily as a demonstration, its introduction marks the beginning of an exhilarating journey for the Friend platform. This significant addition has the potential to elevate the entire system to unprecedented levels, revolutionizing not only our development tools but also enhancing file management and everyday information handling. The incorporation of AI technology holds great promise for transforming the Friend platform into a cutting-edge solution that caters to diverse user needs and opens doors to exciting possibilities.
Friend OS is currently undergoing a transformative shift in its development trajectory. Previously, the impetus behind its progress stemmed from investment capital and commercial partnerships. However, the technology has now embraced a more academically driven approach. With a mature platform capable of supporting commercial deployments, the company has restructured its operations to align with this new reality. The development of the operating system is now undergoing a significant and important transition; evolving into a fully-fledged open-source project with three primary short-term objectives:
Code Base Maintenance and Documentation: A key focus is placed on maintaining a clean and well-documented code base. The aim is to facilitate the seamless onboarding of new developers, administrators, and other skilled individuals to actively contribute to the project’s growth and advancement.
Simplified Platform Download and Deployment: Efforts are being made to enhance the ease of downloading and deploying the Friend OS platform. By streamlining the installation process, accessibility and usability are improved, allowing users to swiftly experience the benefits of the operating system.
Community Building: Building a vibrant and supportive community around the Friend OS platform is paramount. This involves fostering collaboration, knowledge-sharing, and engagement among users, developers, and enthusiasts. By cultivating a thriving community, the platform can benefit from diverse perspectives, innovative ideas, and collective expertise.
