Two months ago we started testing depict, a platform that opens up access to art to everyone on the Internet. Working with over 100 emerging digital artists, a growing community of art-lovers, and every blank screen in the world, we’ve been experimenting with the best way to let anyone bring art into their home, and to make sure artists can make a living doing what they love.

A lot has happened in that short time to make us incredibly excited about the potential for digital art. Anil Dash and Kevin McCoy prototyped monegraph — a bitcoin-inspired method that helps validate digital art ownership — and hardware startups FRM and Electric Objects launched successful Kickstarter campaigns to build dedicated hardware for displaying it.

Today we’re opening up a beta version of depict to anyone who wants to try it. Head to depict.com and you can explore our art, buy digital limited editions of your favorite pieces to own forever, and display them on any connected screen. What makes a work of art meaningful is different for each of us, and our mission is to be the perfect place for anyone to find art that inspires them.

Right now we’re using Chromecast to get art onto your screens, but support for other platforms, like Apple Airplay, are coming very (very) soon. In the meantime, please explore depict, enjoy the growing body of work on the platform, and read some thoughts below from our artists on what the Internet and digital art mean to them as a platform for displaying their work.

The depict team

From the artists:

Andre Woolery — Mixed-media artist based in New York & Jamaica

We’re still at an early stage for digital art, and the boundaries for creation are constantly expanding. depict has been built to enable that innovation and creativity to flourish. It is also empowering collectors to take a serious look at digital art as part of the future, and giving a new existence to screens that lay dormant throughout the day. Hopefully now they can have a new life as a frame for progressive artwork.

Magnus Gjoen — Contemporary artist based in London, UK

Digital display of art is something quite obvious, and a natural progression in the world we live in today. Screens and displays are so good now and rather having them turned off, lend themselves perfectly to displaying art.

Silvi Naci — Artist, curator and designer based in Boston, MA

I’m thrilled for the world to experience, interact and collect digital art. I’m excited to be a part of it; creating a path for everyone to live with digital art. As humans we grow and change everyday, now that can be true for the art we surround ourselves with.
