Britain and EU – a difficult relationship

Final result: 51.9 percent vote for Brexit, 48.1 percent voted against the withdrawal from the EU. The turnout was around 72 percent. A withdrawal from the EU of the United Kingdom is expected after the referendum on the United Kingdom in the European Union in 2016 for 2018. For over 43 years the British are members of the European Union. But now the exit is a done deal. Difficult were the relations from the beginning:

  • EFTA on initiative of London (1960)
  • Way to the EEC (1963)
  • Hard-won referendum (1975)
  • Away from the monetary system (1991)
  • Dispute between Blair and Chirac (2004)
  • EU Lisbon Treaty enters into force (2009)
  • No agreement on EU fiscal pact (2011)
  • Cameron threatens financial veto (2012)
  • London blocked Defence Union (2015)
  • British vote for Brexit (2016)

The success of the Brexit-camp is only the beginning of the great upheavals. David Cameron announces his resignation.

„I was absolutely clear about my belief that Britain is stronger, safer and better off inside the EU. I made clear the referendum was about this, and this alone, not the future of any single politician, including myself. But the British people made a different decision to take a different path. As such I think the country requires fresh leadership to take it in this direction.“ – David Cameron

Serious economic consequences threaten. Even the breakup of the United Kingdom is possible. First is striking how strongly react the exchanges in London and the rest of Europe crash courses. The decision has led to severe turbulence in the currency market. Through depreciation of the British pound against the US dollar, the UK is no longer the fifth largest economy in the world. The euro price declined on Friday to clear the British pound slid to its lowest level since 1985 on.

The EU heads of State and Government have arranged several crisis meetings for next week. After the British vote for a withdrawal from the EU, the European Parliament met on Tuesday morning for a special session in Brussels.
