And the hits just keep on coming. David Cameron, Boris Johnson, and Nigel Farage have now all resigned from the political offices they held during the Brexit campaign. They are now dealing with heavy criticism coming from all directions. Guy Verhofstadt, the former Prime Minister of Belgium and the current leader of the alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe, was quoted as saying “The Brexiters do not have a clue what needs to be done. Cameron, Johnson and Farage behave like rats fleeing a sinking ship.”

Jean Claude Junker, the president of the European Commission, also had some interesting things to say about the British politicians. “ The Brexit heroes of yesterday are now the sad heroes of today. Those who have contributed to the situation in the UK have resigned, Johnson, Farage and others. They are as it were retro-nationalists, they are not patriots. Patriots don’t resign when things get difficult, they stay. Instead of developing the plan, they are leaving the boat.”

Does this not seem incredible to you? The imagery on the left seems so ironic now that Boris Johnson has exited the scene. It appears the phrase “take control” is to be taken quite literally, as Johnson, who was a popular candidate to succeed David Cameron as Prime Minister, is nowhere to be seen.

Nigel Farage, along with “don’t be a quitter Dave” and “stabbed in the back Boris”, has now also resigned from the UKIP, the United Kingdom Independence Party. This is a man who was perfectly willing to support the idea of British Indepedence, but has now shown himself to be completely unwilling to lead the country after it has actually achieved it. However, you can bet he will back when a future opportunity that lacks political difficulty presents itself.

A quote from an article in the Independent, a British online newspaper, sums up the situation nicely: “ Cameron, Farage and Johnson collectively crafted one of the most tumultuous weeks in the history of modern British politics. Every one of them is responsible for the uncertain future we now face and we’re watching them remove themselves from positions of responsibility, one by one. Financially battered, racially divided, politically damaged and chronically demoralised, we’ve been left marooned on a tiny island by a bunch of bickering schoolboys waving off Farage as he sails away into the sunset.”

Oh yeah, and on a lighter note, please don’t forget another recent resignation, that of Roy Hodgson…England’s FORMER national football coach!
