With all the pros and cons popping up about the question weather the British should stay in the EU or not, Scotland could interpret the Brexit as a another positive step towards it’s independence.

Although the Scots voted against the Scottish Independence in September 2014, supporters of the idea that Scotland is no longer dependent on the U.K see a great opportunity for their country within all the debates about the Brexit. Even though David Cameron declared, after the failure of the vote of 2014, that the issue of Scottish separation had been settled for a generation or perhaps for a lifetime. Concerning the current state, this argument appears quite different now.

As surveys show, the scottish population is more pro-EU than the people in other parts of the U.K. Therefore, it is possible that a lot of Scots will vote to remain in the EU, while in the rest of the United Kingdom the election result could be contra-EU. Thus, Alex Salmond who is the ex head of the scottish government, hopes that, in case of the Brexit, Scotland could make a new attempt for the referendum of it’s independence. This would arise if the majority of the Scots would opt for staying in the Eu, while in the other parts of the U.K., people would vote in favour of leaving the EU.

Consequently, Salomond, as well as Nicola Sturgeon, the head of the SNP, have already announced that within the next 2 years, there would be new proceedings about a referendum. Representing the proponents of the Scottish independence, Salmond is optimistic about the future of Scotland. From his point of view, the Scots have the chance to select between independence under the european firmament or a very conservative british government. Hence they would, according to him, always chose independence over regression.
