Britain’s People

From Empire to Europe

From April to July we saw Britain’s clinging onto an idea of a long gone Empire with the Queen’s birthday celebrations. Through the referendum we saw a will to reengage with this Empire, to reinvent the relationship with the Commonwealth. Britain went as far as it could go in showing that by voting to leave the European Union. We saw a Britain that is nostalgically looking back at those great days, that still wants to have an isolated position, that still needs to have special treatment. A country full of racism fueled by the anonymity of the internet and a country full of fear of the foreign, fear of losing jobs and their good health.

But we also saw 4 million people petitioning against a division from Europe. We saw thousands of people taking part in Pride demonstrations spreading love all over the country. “Love not Leave” or “We are the 48%” were the claims of tens of thousands participating in a pro-Europe-march at the beginning of July.

We have seen a divided Britain, but a Britain that can save itself from dissolving if it does the right thing now. I wish good luck with that and hope for the best. In the end it is a country full of amicable people who deserve a future full of opportunities as much as anyone else.
