Many European citizens living in Britain nervously anticipating the 23 June vote and start making contingency plans. Some are applying for UK citizenship, others considering to return home.

Eventually we will leave…How soon will depend on the result of the referendum. The debate about Brexit had made us realise that we were not at home here.

I feel rejected, like a bad transplant.

Many expats suffer from the lack of a clear picture of what a post-Brexit Britain would look like, this causes concern for Europeans resident across the UK. One of the Brexit camp’s most potent argument is that leaving the EU would enable Britain to secure a firmer grip on immigration, however, this raises all kind of worries about a future dominated by visas, work permits and bureaucracy. Is a post-EU Britain a country worth staying in?… Apparently, other people ask themselves the same question..

I could apply to gain British citizenship but the question is, do I really want to be in the UK when the UK does not want to be part of the EU?

However, not only Europeans living in Britain could face huge issues, also those Britains, who live all over Europe. If the referendum decides to leave the EU there are a few possible scenarios, what could happen to the approximately 2 million Britains in Europe.

The “best-case” scenario for expats would be that UK retains its membership in the European Economic Areal (EEA). This would mean that most existing rules on free movement in Europe would continue to apply.

An as hoc solution between the UK and the EU would regulate the matters of free movement in Europe. There were probably less liberate agreements compared to EEA countries and there would be at least bureaucratic issues for Expats.

The third possibility would mean no agreement at all, this scenario would affect British citizen the most. Expats could have to apply for temporary visa or seek asylum in the EU.
