From one fan to another

(As this weeks posts are mainly all about the Brexit, I felt like doing something different. In class we talked about linking the EURO 2016 to the current situation and this is what I’m trying to do while writing a fictional statement from the point of view of a non-violent English football fan- I used articles on the violent situations between English and Russian fans as an inspiration and tried to finish with a personal comment- please remember this is completely fictitious and an experiment!):

As a passionate football fan, following the EURO 2016, I feel the urge to raise my voice : I’m sure you have heard about what happenend in Marseille after the match England-Russia. Violent clashes between football fans: people kicking each other, chaos in the streets.. police even had to use tear gas to disperse fans in the city. Did you know that even the metro system was shut down? One friend of mine posted on Twitter:

Bit chaotic in Marseille. Metro shut walked about 5 miles before we got a taxi. Glad to be back in our hotel. (Richard Drake 12:50 12 Jun 2016).

I’m not sure how many people were injured or had to go to the hospital- but I’m pretty sure about one thing: In times of huge uncertainty, one thing should be clear : Football is not about violence!
Europe seems to be falling apart and football fans have nothing better to do than to fight each other? Don’t they care about the feeling of unity? Does one ask too much simply wanting to watch a football game peacefully?

“Vladimir Putin has apparently poked fun at England football fans, as he questioned how 200 Russian supporters were able to beat up “several thousand” followers of Roy Hodgson’s side at the Euro 2016 tournament in France” I read on the independent.co.uk. Don’t get me wrong: of course it is important to know what happened and who started the clashes, but in the end both English and Russian fans participated and I don’t want to be blamed for their behaviour!

I would simply like to enjoy a good football game, without any violent suprises. Plus, I really feel that we should work together and not cause the French police even more problems or distractions when they are currently trying to protect fans, football players- humans!
