From Empire to Europe

This is my last Medium post in the From Empire to Europe platform as the semester has come to an end. During the course of the semester, many striking political events and developments occurred in the United Kingdom. At the beginning of the semester, people were beginning to debate if the British people might possibly vote for Brexit. Some weeks later, when Brexit became more likely, people started to discuss possible consequences. Then, the referendum took place on 23rd June and the UK voted for Brexit, the stock-markets and the British pound collapsed. Now, everyone was “surprised” and from all sides people started to argue whether the referendum should be repeated or how the Brexit talks should be held with the European Union. To make things complete, David Cameron stepped back as Prime Minister and Nigel Farage as well as Boris Johnson disappeared from the public. In the end, Theresa May became the new Prime Minister and Boris Johnson was appointed as Foreign Secretary.

But UK politics were not the only topics in our seminar. We also talked about the Suez-Crisis, the Partition of India and Pakistan and the founding of the European Union. Overall, this was a really interesting seminar which dealt with many historically and contemporarily important political developments. There are many things I will have to deal with again as a teacher for English and Geography in some years. I also liked the Medium posts because they gave us the opportunity to reflect on semianr topics from a perspective of our own personal interest.
