Reflections about the Course

From Empire to Europe

I really loved this course — while we studied a lot of British history over the course of our studies, there was never enough time to take a closer look at the downfall of the empire! I did grin when I saw others’ posts about waking up early — I had the same problem, and at first, I was also a bit frustrated about having to write the blog posts.

But as the semester went on, it got more and more easy to come up with new topics. It was really fun exchanging ideas and seeing what the others in the course were writing about. This course was especially relevant for us this semester, because of the referendum and it’s shocking result. We had so much to talk about and it was really great seeing the multitude of different types of posts about Brexit! I especially loved the controversial ones — we were all convinced that Brexit was a bad idea, including myself, but there were a few people who posted some ideas from the other side of the debate, and these were very well researched and written.

All in all, I really hope that this course can be continued — it was definitely one of the most interesting courses in British Studies to date, and I think it’s topic is something everyone should be aware of in more detail. Maybe, as someone else has suggested, it could be renamed? From Empire to Europe to Brexit?

Thank you to everyone from the course for your awesome posts, and your wonderful responses!
