The British People and the “Brexit”

There are a lot of different topics concerning the Brexit. I am sure they are more used to referendums than the Germans, for instance. In the past, there were referendums — eleven in the last 43 years. However, these referendums concerned the idea of “splitting up” the UK in some way.

The topic that came to my mind was the British people. With the referendum in June this year the British population will decide if they want their country to stay in the EU — or not. I found a very helpful website of BBC about this (you can find the link at the end of this post). It is supposed to help the people whether they should vote for yes or no.

On this website, different questions are being discussed: What is happening? What is a referendum? Why is a referendum being held? What is the European Union? What does Brexit mean? Who will be able to vote? … Even if BBC is more of a private channel, the answers to these questions seem to be objective. It appears to me that they really try to explain what the whole referendum is about and what it means to vote yes or no. They give not only reasons for but also against the Brexit.

“So would Britain be better in or out? — It depends which way you look at it — or what you believe is important. Leaving the EU would be a big step — arguably far more important than who wins the next general election — but would it set the nation free or condemn it to economic ruin?”

Even if this website is really helpful for the British, it can still be difficult to decide. I feel certain that it is going to be an exciting year if the UK really leaves the EU. The people might not know what impact this referendum may have. For me, it would be very interesting to know how the population feels about the Brexit, if they really do research before they vote or if they care at all about it.
